Real test awaits Sabah Rhinos

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my
NNAKE … is set to spearhead Sabah Rhinos attack against KL Felda United FC tonight.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Rhinos will be put to the real test when they take on KL Felda United FC at the Tawau Sports Complex field tonight. The Safa Tawau Invitational Tournament’s last match will kick off at 8pm. Sabah Rhinos head coach Vjeran Simunic will surely parade what is likely to be his first- team players for the clash.

After all, this will be his best opportunity to see the team’s true strength ahead of their Premier League opener against UiTM FC on February 12. All this while, the state side have been playing against local clubs, and have been emerging victorious, including the 3-0 win over Juta FC of Tenom prior to their arrival in Tawau on Thursday.

They registered a 2-0 win over the Brunei Under-23 team in the tournament’s opener on Friday with Brazilian midfielder Marco Tulio Lopes netting the opener from the spot while Alto Linus added the second after the break. But against KL Felda United FC, it is going to be a different ball game for Simunic and his boys as the Super League side have enough experience to do the damage.

Football offers lucrative rewards

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my
LET’S PLAY FOOTBALL … Tawfiq kicks the ball to officially launch the programme as the rest look on yesterday. Alijus is standing (3rd left), next to Abd Rashid (4th left).
KOTA KINABALU: Today, football is not just a game. Instead, it can be made as a career that could provide a lucrative return, said Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, as he calls on Sabah youngsters to make a breakthrough into the international level scene in the sport. The Youth and Sports Minister said it is not impossible for Malaysian players to follow the footsteps of African players, who have made it big in Europe such as in the English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga or the Italian League.

“Nowadays, football is not just a sport, but it can be made as a career that provides good returns,” said Tawfiq. He said this when launching the TABS Safa Bandaraya Football Development Programme, which is sponsored by CIMB Foundation. On the programme, Tawfiq lauded TABS Safa Bandaraya’s efforts, adding that this will only do good for Sabah football.

He also welcomed the move by CIMB Foundation in sponsoring TABS, hoping that it will be an example to the rest of the corporate bodies or companies to come forward and give a helping hand in the development of sports in Sabah. “Of course such programmes need sponsorship … because of that we must thank CIMB Foundation for their generosity and I hope they continue to support this programme,” said Tawfiq.

Debutants KDMM FC out to spring surprise

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: KDMM FC are ready to make their presence felt at this year’s FAM Cup challenge, which is scheduled to kick off next month. The club, under the umbrella of KDM Malaysia, will be making their debut in the league, dubbed as the country’s third division, after the Super League and the Premier League.

KDM Malaysia President Datuk Peter Anthony said he was happy and satisfied with the team’s preparations. “The development of the team is progressing well and they are at a level that we have expected from them. Our overall squad, from team management led by team manager Henry Saimpon, and coaching staff headed by Andrew Majanggim as head coach as well as players, have shown superb commitment and are in high spirit ahead of the kick off.

“I hope this is a sign of a good start for KDMM FC in facing the FAM Cup challenge, which is expected to kick off on February 28,” said Peter, at the launching of the team’s jersey and introduction of players ceremony on Thursday. The function cum dinner was launched by UMNO Vice President Datuk Seri Shafie Abdal, who is also the patron of the KDM Malaysia Football League 2014-2015.

Rosdin ready to deliver

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah Rhinos skipper Rosdin Wasli is still as spirited as ever in his search for football glory. The state side’s former utility man has vowed to do all he could to help his new club, KDMM FC, who will be making their debut at this year’s FAM Cup, which is scheduled to kick off on February 28. Rosdin, 34, who can play in midfield or centre back, is one of the four former Sabah Rhinos donning KDMM FC colours alongside midfielder Zuraindey Jumai, goalkeeper Endre S. Tipay and Kedah-born defender Rezuan Muhd Radzy, who played for Sabah in the early 2000s.

The foursome are seen as the most experienced players in a youthful KDMM FC squad. “I will use my experience to help my new team KDMM FC. There are so many young footballers in the squad and for me, they can only get better…I will assist them in any way I can … in training or in proper matches. “By doing so, hopefully they will be much more determined and confident to take on the challenges in the FAM Cup,” Rosdin said, when met by reporters at the launching of the team’s jersey and Introduction of Players held on Thursday night.

“While we target a top-four finish, nothing is impossible in football and of course we would love to do better than that, such as winning promotion to the Premier League. “The team have been well prepared including in terms of fitness. The only thing that needs improvement is our combination and understanding of each other in matches. Rosdin, who was among the players that did not have their contracts extended with the state squad at the end of last season, had opted to sign for KDMM FC after he was impressed with the professionalism and objectives of the team management.

Positive development

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my
AIRBORNE ... Maxsius Musa (all white), jumps high as he heads home a superb cross from Leopold Alfonso Otong to break the deadlock inside the first quarter of the tie.
KOTA KINABALU: The signs are there for all to see that the Sabah Rhinos will have to do it the hard way in their search for Premier League glory this season. There will be no easy battle for them this time around but to fight their hearts out in all their matches if they harbour any hope to do well. After all they are a new-look side where more than half of the players are new faces, with only seven retained from the 2015 squad.

Teamwork, discipline, commitment as well as fighting spirit are among the key elements they must have to achieve their goals. Things are developing positively within the team, which is a good indication. They registered a 3-0 win over local outfit Juta FC in a friendly match at the Keningau Sports Complex field on Tuesday.

Team manager Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan is happy to see the positive development in the team, especially local talents, who have shown quite a game in the tie. “Our local players put up a convincing performance in the tie and this shows that they are ready to spearhead the challenge this season. “I hope they will continue to strive harder to improve as a team or individually. Although we have not set any high target, but I can see that they are all in high spirits to make Sabah proud,” said Nizam when met after the match.

Malaysian football legend James Wong hopes to revive Sabah's fortunes

The Star

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian football legend James Wong hopes to bring back the golden years for Sabah. The 64-year-old James, a household name in the 1970s and 1980s, said that “work is in progress to rebuild the state football team”. “Slowly but surely we will revive Sabah football,” said James when contacted in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday.

The Sabah FA (Safa) have appointed James and his former strike partner Hassan Sani as assistant managers of the state team. They will assist head coach Vjeran Simunic for their Premier League campaign this year. “Well, it’s good to be back after 30 years or so,” said James, who is known as “King James’ by his fans. “The two of us were invited by Safa to help out and we felt that we could share our expertise with the young players.

We will not disrupt the main training sessions. We will have our own one-on-one workouts with the players. “Who knows, maybe we can help inspire these young boys to improve on the finer parts of their game. For instance, analysing what is missing in their game ... when to run, where to position themselves and others,” said James.

New Nigerian striker

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Rhinos is hoping for goals galore from Nigerian Prince Tochukwu Nnake after securing his signature as the fourth foreign import for the 2016 season. Sabah Football Association Deputy President II Datuk Lawrence Gimbang said the 1.90m striker who came for trial last week was offered a one-year-contract.

"A top target man is our main priority this season and we hope he will bring goals because that's the reason why we signed him," said Lawrence. "We try our best to make the young team stronger this season and we also hope he can work well with his new teammates especially the local youngsters in the team." Prince when contacted said he is happy to play for the Rhinos and hope he will deliver the goods.

Meanwhie, all foreign imports including Prince are likely to see action when Sabah Rhinos take on Juta FC in a friendly match at the Keningau Sports Complex Tuesday starting 8pm. Coach Vjeran Simunic said he will try to play all available outfield players during the match. "The match in Keningau is part of my training programme as well as a team bonding trip and of coures we will try to put out all the players."

IMBAS KEMBALI: "SABAH JUARA PIALA FA 1995!"

9. Zainal Abidin Hassan
10. Dollah Salleh
11. Igor Shkvyrin
Perlawanan malam ini bukan hanya sekadar perebutan piala, tetapi turut melibatkan persaingan individu.
~Penjaga Gol No.1 Malaysia~
Sebaik Khairul mengumumkan pemindahan mengejutnya ke Sabah, Mudzar akhirnya menyarung "Jersi No. 1."
Selepas menjadi pilihan utama Pahang, Mudzar mula mendapat panggilan untuk menjalani latihan bersama Skuad Kebangsaan.
Namun, masih lagi pilihan kedua selepas Khairul.
~Pemain Olimpik Australia~
Scott Ollerenshaw dan Alan Davidson mewakili Australia pada Temasya Olimpik 1988 di Seoul.
Australia ketika itu berjaya layak sehigga ke peringkat Suku Akhir sebelum ditewaskan Soviet Union 0-3.
~Penyerang No.1 Malaysia~

Tamat Separuh Masa:
SABAH 1-0 PAHANG
SAB Gol- Matlan Marjan (Min-44)

Separuh masa kedua
Selepas tempoh 15 minit rehat tamat, kedua-dua pasukan kembali masuk ke padang.
Sorakan penyokong Sabah masih belum putus.
Sepakan kaki kiri rendah Matlan berjaya ditepis Mudzar.
Pertahanan Pahang hanya mampu melihat apabila bola muntah, pantas disambar Ollerenshaw yang tiba-tiba muncul merembat padu ke gawang Pahang. GOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL GOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! OLLERENSHAW GOOLLLLLLLLLLL!!
Sabah melebarkan jurang 2-0!
Minit 58, SABAH 2-0 PAHANG
Sorakan penyokong yang masih belum reda dari gol pertama Matlan, sekali lagi mengamatkan Stadium Merdeka.
Sejurus permainan dimulakan semula, Pahang terus menyerang pantas melalui Cerro.
GOOOLLLLLL!!!! GOOOOLLLLLL!!!
PRITT!
PRITT!
PRITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!
Tiupan wisel panjang oleh Nik Ahmad menjadi signal permulaan sebuah pesta! SABAH JUARA!!!!! SABAH MANANG!!!!KITA MANANG!!!!
Tamat perlawanan
SABAH 3-1 PAHANG
Min-44 Matlan Marjan (SAB)
Min-58 Scott Ollerenshaw (SAB)
Min-81 Milomir Seslija (SAB)
Min-89 Dollah Salleh (PAH).
Selepas penyampaian trofi kejuaraan, semua pemain menjulang piala mengelilingi Stadium Merdeka.

Sejurus selepas majlis penyampaian hadiah, Penjaring gol kedua, Scott Ollerenshaw sekali lagi "menemui sasaran".
"Rembatan" Ollerenshaw berjaya "menembusi hati" Ratu Karate Malaysia, Michele Koh.
3. Penjaring kedua, Scott Ollerenshaw
We mustn't let our guard down just because of just one success. We should e hungry for more and must get down to serious training immediately"
4. Penyerang Simpanan, Bobby Chua (Tidak diturunkan)
"Kegembiran ini tidak dapat saya lafazkan dengan kata-kata.
Penduduk Sabah yang tidak mengenal suku dan bangsa pasti sedang meraihkan kejayaan ini bersama-sama.
Sabah sudah menunggu sangat lama. Sekarang, kami sangat yakin boleh mengalahkan mana-mana pasukan pun."
5. Pertahanan, Ong Kim Swee (Baru 4 Bulan berpindah dari Sarawak)
"Ini adalah kejuaraan besar pertama saya. Saya yakin, kita sangat layak untuk menjulang Kejuaraan Liga Perdana pula."

FAM satisfied with facilities at K'gau stadium

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: KDM Malaysia are a step closer to making Keningau Sports Complex Stadium as the home venue for Sabah KDMM FC in their FAM campaign this year. Representative from Football Association Malaysia (FAM) Mohd Ziani A Bakar who carried out an inspection recently was satisfied with the facilities provided.

"In terms of convenience and necessity, there is no problem for this venue to host FAM matches... but there are still some aspects that still need to be corrected before the officially confirmation, which I think it's not a problem," he said. It is understood that KDM Malaysia will get the help of Sabah Sports Board (LSNS) to ensure the stadium is fully in place as their main venue for the FAM Cup competition is scheduled to begin on February 28.

Zaini also praised KDM Malaysia in their initiative to host the matches in the 3,500 capacity stadium for their team. Musa: Play with passion!

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman urges state players to emulate the spirit and commitment of the legendary James Wong and Hassan Sani, who relied only on passion for the sport to guide them to greatness. He said if they can do that, it is not impossible for them to do well this upcoming new season. Musa, who is also the Sabah FA Supremo, said back in the day they (James and Hassan) had no salary and only had a small allowance, but they still managed to become great players because they played with passion.

“If you have passion and play football wholeheartedly, you can be successful like them,” he said, at the 2016 Jerseys Launching and Players Introduction ceremony here yesterday. Also present were Sabah FA Deputy President II Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, Secretary-General Alijus Sipil, Sabah Education Department Director Datuk Jame Alip, team manager Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan and Safa Supreme Council Members, among others.

Both James and Hassan are undoubtedly living legends of Sabah football who in their era were among the country’s top players. Musa said the reason they have decided to bring in both James and Hassan into the team as assistant team managers is because they hope the duo could impart their knowledge and experience to the current players. He went on to say that aside from passion, players must also possess the will to succeed and mind-set of champions.

Hassan Sani, James Wong Mampu Tingkat Bola Sepak Sabah - Musa Aman

Dedi out to help Sabah regain football supremacy

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Rhinos newly hired midfielder Dedi Kusnandar has vowed to help the state Premier League squad regain its supremacy in the national football scene. The former Indonesia Under-23 player insists nothing is more important than to see the team do well in his debut season in the M-League.

Dedi, now 24, believes nothing is impossible as long as there is a will. “My main priority here now is to help Sabah rediscover its rhythm as they were once among the top teams in the country. “Although this upcoming season, Sabah will be represented by quite a number of young players, but I’m confident Sabah will rise again,” said Dedi, who hails from Sumedang, Indonesia.

“This is my first time in Sabah, but I have heard about it (Sabah) that they are one of the top teams in Malaysia not too long ago,” Dedi said, adding that he also heard about Sabah from its former striker Marwan Sayedeh, who also had stint in the Indonesia League.

Stay loyal

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has called on the local fans to be loyal, mature and play their role as the team’s 12th man when the Sabah Rhinos kick off their Premier League challenge on February 12. The Sabah Rhinos team manager said their new-look side need full support from the local fans.

Nizam also knows well that negative criticism could also jeopardise their season. And for that reason, he hopes and calls on everyone, especially the fans, to stay positive and rally behind the state side in realising the common goal of wanting the state side to do well. “I think no matter how angry the fans may be, they need to be wiser in playing with words when voicing dissatisfaction.

“For me, a mature and loyal fan is one that will support the team in times of joy and adversity. We play football with 11 men but the fans can be our twelfth,” Nizam said, when met at the team’s friendly match with the President’s Cup squad here two days ago. He said negative emotions can impact badly on the team and that full support should be given to help bring out the best in the players.

Simunic calls for patience

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my
IMPRESSIVE … Prince Nnake (orange training vest) tries to avoid a tackle during the friendly yesterday.
KOTA KINABALU: Vjeran Simunic insists he is here to build a side for the future, as he seeks for patience, especially from the local fans. The Croatian believes with proper guidance and the players showing the right attitude it would not be long before Sabah could regain their glory days at the national football scene.

“We must be patient with this team. They have no experience but they are very talented and hungry. As the coach, I can see the situation in the team is growing…the attitude and so on. “I’m happy that majority in the squad are Sabahan players. Sabah have a good future but we must be a little bit patient with this team.

This team can be nice in next two years,” Simunic said, when met after seeing his side struggle to a two-all draw against the state Under-21 side in a friendly tie at the synthetic pitch in Likas here yesterday. He added that he was also looking at players from the President’s Cup to be roped into the senior team and he believed that there are more talents to be discovered across the state.

Nigerian striker here for trials

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my
HOPEFUL … Prince Nnake upon his arrival at the KKIA yesterday.
KOTA KINABALU: Striker Prince Tochukwu Nnake arrived in the state capital here yesterday to attend trials with the Sabah Rhinos, who are still searching for the right man to complete their foreign quota signing. They are hunting for a striker, who they can rely on to spearhead the attack, and on paper, the Nigerian seems to fit the bill as Sabah Rhinos head coach Vjeran Simunic prefers a lanky big man to lead their charge.

Prince Nnake, 26, is 1.90m-tall, and a glance at his experience, he started his professional career back home with Dolphins FC (2008-2009). He moved to Sharks FC (2009-2010) before being loaned out to Belgium lower league club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. He played for the Belgium outfit during the 2010-2011 season before returning home and signing for Kwara United (2012-2013).

He moved abroad again for the second time, but this time he signed for an Egyptian football club based in Giza (2014). Last year, he signed for another Egyptian Premier League club Alassiouty Sports club. Prince Nnake is not alone trying to land a deal with the Sabah FA as two strikers, another Nigerian (Jackson Victor Ogheneochuko), while the second one from Ivory Coast (Gosse Gui Serge Roland), are expected to arrive for trials anytime soon now.

‘Discipline top priority’

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Mohd Yassin Aman wants his young charges to be fully focused on their preparations for the Youth Cup challenge, which is scheduled to kick off early March. He said that now they have cemented their place in the squad after signing their respective contracts with the Sabah FA over the weekend, they must entirely focus solely on the team’s preparations.

A total of 25 players put pen to paper on Friday, while one Mohd Shariman Mukarim, might not make the team after failing a medical. “We are still looking at his (Mohd Shariman) case, but if he cannot make the squad, we are fine with just 25 for the new season,” the state Under-19 team manager said when contacted yesterday. Yassin said he has a good talk with his squad during Saturday’s training, and that he expect them to maintain high discipline in the team.

“I would like to reiterate that our top priority will be on discipline. We want to educate them the importance of discipline … be it in football in our daily life. Without discipline, no matter how good you are, you will not go far in football. “We will not tolerate on this (on and off the pitch). This is our future, so I will be strict as far as discipline in the team is concerned.

Azraai Khor: I wasn't even given a contract to sign at Sabah

Goal.com
BY ZULHILMI ZAINAL

A few months after the acrimonious end to his brief stint at Sabah, head coach Azraai Khor has revealed that he had not even been handed a contract to sign at the Borneo side. Speaking at a Malaysian football forum that was also attended by Malaysian FA deputy president Afandi Hamzah and Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP) CEO Kevin Ramalingam in Bukit Jalil on Saturday, Azraai revealed the reason for calling the Sabah FA deputy president Datuk Lawrence Gimbang "the joke of the century" when he was asked to sign a termination contract when he was terminated. Claiming that he had neglected to sign a contract because of the busy pre-season preparations with the Rhinos, Azraai let on that problems surfaced when he was made to go through a middle man when he needed to get in touch with team chairman, Musa Aman.

"Before I went there, I was given the assurance that "nobody in the FA would (interfere with) you", (if) anything you communicate directly to the chief minister (and team chairman) Musa Aman," Azraai shared. However when he got there, he was made to communicate through an intermediary instead.

"There was this middle man, a Chinese man from Singapore, running his business or a proxy or something like that," he continued. The proxy told Azraai that they would only sign free agent foreign players from a Singaporean club which the man is familiar with, which Azraai disagreed with. Azraai decided then that was the last straw.

FA continues search for quality striker

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah FA is forced to go on hunting for a top striker again after they decided not to tie up former KL Sime Darby FC’s Croatian hitman Karlo Primorac. Its Deputy President II Datuk Lawrence Gimbang said they are left with no choice but to look for a quality goal poacher after finding out that Karlo is carrying an injury.

“We will not sign him. He is injured,” Gimbang said, without elaborating (on Karlo’s injury). “So now, we have to look for a new target. In fact, we are expecting two players (one from Ivory Coast and the other from Nigeria) to come for trials with the team next week, and we expect them to be here on Tuesday,” he added.

It is believed that the Ivory Coast striker, who can also be deployed in midfield, has been identified as Gosse Gui Serge Roland. The 27-year-old is 1.90m-tall and last played for Yanbian, a club in the Chinese League. As for the Nigerian, he is little known, and said to be Jackson Victor Ogheneochuko.

KDM FC confident of mounting strong challenge

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: KDM FC have opted to carry the underdogs tag when they make their FAM Cup debut this upcoming season. Club President Datuk Peter Anthony said being newcomers in the league, the tag suits them well, as they don’t want to be seen a little too ambitious in their maiden appearance in the league, which is dubbed as the country’s third tier after the Super League and the Premier League.

However, Peter, who is also the KDM Malaysia President, was confidence his inexperienced side can mount a strong challenge against the rest of the participating teams. “If you look at the team now, our players are in high spirits. Furthermore, in football anything can happen. We will see later how the team performs in the competition, but so far what I can say is that there is no problem with forming combinations and all our players are fit.

Peter said this at a press conference after witnessing 20 squad players signing their offer letters yesterday. He said the offer letters would automatically be converted into contracts pending successful results from the players’ medical tests, which is to be done today. “All of them signed their offer letters today (yesterday).

Juniors target quarters

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Juil Nuatim has set a quarter-final target for his young side in the President’s Cup challenge 2016. The Junior Rhinos team manager said that will be their ultimate goal for this new season after failing to make the cut the last two seasons. Speaking to reporters at the contract signing ceremony held at the Sabah FA office in Likas here yesterday,

Juil said anything less than that is unacceptable considering the fact that they have made solid preparations ahead of the new season, which is expected to kick off early March. “Our goal is to reach the quarter-finals. From there we will take a one-match at a time approach,” said Juil. Sabah FA Deputy President II Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, Secretary General Alijus Haji Sipil as well as the State Under-19 team manager Mohd Yassin Aman were also present at the function. Juil went on to reveal that this time around, the squad is made up of more than half new faces as well as from last year’s Under-19 squad.

“We still have seven players from last year’s squad namely Rahman Shah Marajeh, Masran Masri, Mohd Zul Fadlisham Roseland, Salim Mastar, Randy Baruh @ Samson, Mohd Ikmal Bahari and O’Neil Shanahan Marcelinus Bungkilan. “The rest are new faces, either from the last year’s Under-19 squad or those selected from the selection trials held late last year.

Rhinos target top-four finish

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has set a reasonable target for his new-look side. The Sabah Rhinos team manager said they are aiming for a top-four or five finish considering the fact that they have a mixed blend of young, experienced and new players in the team. “We will not set a high target for the team.

The team management hopes that our team will not be on the wrong end of the Premier League standings. Personally, if possible, I would like to see them occupy the top four or five in the Premier League standings from the start of the season until the end of the season, and that’s our target this season,” said Nizam after seeing his side notch a 2-0 win over FAM Cup-bound DYS FC at the UMS Stadium on Tuesday.

When asked further on the team’s goal, he said: “It is the ultimate goal of every competing team (in the Premier League) of trying to gain Super League promotion, Sabah Rhinos included. But in our situation, we have so many young players and we would not want to put any extra burden on them. All we hope for from them is to give it their best shot and try to be among the contenders (for the title) this upcoming season.”

DYS FC ready for FAM Cup challenge

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: It’s all systems go for newcomers DYS FC in their preparations for the upcoming FAM Cup challenge 2016. They have tied up 26 players to spearhead their charge in the country’s third tier league as they quietly set their sights on Premier League promotion. They have every reason to dream big.

They have experience in their side, and in fact, more than a dozen of their players have seen action at this level or higher. Their team captain, Md Reithuddin Ag Emran is a former state defender. They also have former national and state striker Zainizam Marjan in their squad. Players like Md June Azral Lalah, Jufrey Omopor, Razid Gapar, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Billy Doliante and Shahrul Chankui have all seen action with the state senior side.

That is not all as they also have quite a number of former Reserve League players, namely Hafizan Jahar, Justin Samaan, Fneckly Baris, Ibrahim Abu Nawas and Mohd Adiafandi Dullah. Shairul Boidi and Mohd Arfiyanshah too have the experience of playing at this level, having featured for Sabah Cebagoo FC in the league in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Rozaimi signs three-year deal with JDT

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Rozaimi Abd Rahman’s decision to dessert his state team did not come down too well with the Sabah FA, as its Deputy President Datuk Lawrence Gimbang revealed that they have already had a gentleman’s agreement with the former national Under-23 player that he would sign for the Sabah Rhinos. Gimbang yesterday expressed his disappointment after learning through Facebook that Rozaimi had signed for Johor Darul Takzim.

According to him, Rozaimi had initially agreed to sign for Sabah Rhinos for this new season. He said: “We have met Rozaimi and after holding discussions, we agreed to his demands…how much (is the offer) I think we do not have to reveal here. So, we were quite confident regarding the whole matter because once we talked, we are being serious…we are sincere.”

“He was training with the team, and on occasions when he did not turn up for the morning session, we made attempts to contact him and he gave reasons. Despite that we still asked him to join the rest of the squad,” said Gimbang. Gimbang claimed Rozaimi did not pick up or return their calls on the day he was supposed to sign his contract, which was on Tuesday.

Full squad next week

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA will unveil the state Premier League 2016 squad next week. Sabah FA Deputy President II Datuk Lawrence Gimbang said they should have a complete squad by January 20. Speaking to reporters when met at the team’s training at the synthetic field in Likas here yesterday, he said the remaining days would be crucial for the players, who are still on trials to make the team. He added that they have more or less identified the players, including foreign players, but need a little more time before offering them contracts.

“We want to make sure that they are good enough for the team and injury free. That is why we will have the medical test on January 18 because it is very important…there is no point signing a player who has an injury. “By January 20 we should have the full squad,” said Gimbang, before revealing that they would make the official announcement of the state squad, which includes the Premier League, President’s Cup and Under-19 on January 22. So far, he pointed out, they have signed 15 players.

However, he added that some of these players still need to undergo a medical before they can be officially part of the team for the new season. For the record, teams are allowed to register up to 30 players with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) for the M-League. But Gimbang said they are unlikely to settle for 25 or 26.

Yassin: U-19 squad is the future of Sabah football

BY FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Mohd Yassin Aman has set a modest target for his young squad by wanting them to do better than last year in the FAM Youth Cup 2016 challenge. The State Under-19 manager said anything more than that will be a bonus. “Of course we want to do better, but our first priority is to improve on our finishing (last year).

From there, we will see what we can do to have a good season. “I think we have quite a decent side, and I’m quite confident of doing well in the competition,” said Yassin when met at the team’s training at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex field here on Saturday. “Like any other league, this too will not be an easy one. But as long as we are serious in our efforts and show good discipline on and off the field, our chances of doing well will also be there.

“So, this season, we want to make sure that discipline in the team is our utmost priority. We need to do it because this is one of the most important ingredient to do well,” he added. Yassin believes, he has a winning combination in guiding the team to success in the league. “We have Jelius (Ating) as the head coach, and he will be assisted by the experienced Awang Sabtu Jamil, who guided Sabah to their only President’s Cup crown in the late 90s while our goalkeeper coach is Jasrih Jabidin.

Favourable draw for Sabah Rhinos

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Rhinos have been given a relatively easy draw in the FA Cup challenge. They are pitted against FAM Cup outfit Kuala Lumpur MOF (Ministry of Finance) FC in the second round of the competition. The match will be played at the Likas Stadium.

The date has not been fixed, but it could be either on February 19 or February 20. Sabah FA Secretary General Alijus Hj Sipil when contacted said the FA of Malaysia will only confirm the date of the tie next week when they release the full fixtures. The draw was held at one of the leading hotels in Shah Alam yesterday.

Sabah were represented by team manager Datuk Hj Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan at the draw. On paper, Sabah Rhinos, who are currently under the watchful eyes of Croatian head coach Vjeran Simunic, should face no trouble of making it into the round of 16, where they could face either Kuantan FA or Penang. Sabah won their only FA Cup title back in 1995 with a 3-1 win over Pahang in the final.

Foreign signings ahead of deadline

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA is set to complete their four foreign signings well ahead of the deadline, which is on January 31. So far, they seemed to have found three. In fact, it is reliably learnt that both Croatian defender Igor Celina and Indonesian midfielder Dedi Kusnandar have already put pen to paper, while Brazilian playmaker Marco Tulio Lopez is set to follow suit.

And now, Sabah Rhinos head coach Vjeran Simunic is still searching for a prolific striker to lead his attack with former KL Sime Darby FC striker Karlo Primorac in his mind. Former Perak striker Chad Souza is also on his radar. Simunic said he needs a reliable striker to lead the attack. “We need a quality striker to partner our local boys,” said Simunic when met at the team’s training yesterday.

“We almost have a complete squad. Now we only need a quality foreign striker as far as or the foreign quota is concerned,” said the 62-year-old Croatian. “I have two or three players in mind (striker), but now we are waiting for their arrival,” he added. On the local front, Sabah have signed 12 players, namely Julamri Muhammad, Alto Linus, Jenius Karib, Rawilson Batuil, Badrul Affendy, Maxsius Musa, Azzizan Nordin, Ricco Nigel Milus, Dendy Lowa, Rexjeson Pitirus, Leopold Alfonso Otong and Shafuan Shaari.

Rozaimi’s return subject to medical

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Former national Under-23 striker Rozaimi Abd Rahman could make a shock return into the State Premier League squad. It is understood that his place in Vjeran Simunic’s squad is only subject to a medical, which will be done later this month. In fact, the 23-year-old Rozaimi who was one of the numerous players who did not have their contracts renewed for the new season, is already training with the team.

It seems that the Sabah FA has had a change of heart and is willing to give the Bongawan-born player a second chance to win a place in the team for the new season, which is expected to kick off mid February. Even newly-appointed head coach Simunic is willing to help Rozaimi regain his best.

“I have always heard about Rozaimi as being a talented player and I also heard that he is injury prone. “As a coach, I believe he (Rozaimi) can get back to his best albeit that it will take a little bit of time,” said Simunic, when met at the team’s training at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex synthetic field here yesterday.

DYS FC’s preparations take a slight knock

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: DYS FC’s preparations for the FAM Cup 2016 challenge took a slight knock after some of its key players seemed reluctant to commit themselves to the team. That is not all, as they are still without a head coach. With the clock ticking fast, this is not the start any team would want.

At a contract signing ceremony held at a local hotel here on Tuesday, only 17 out of the 25 players put pen to paper while the rest opted not to do so. But interestingly those who signed saw quite a number of ex-Sabah players either senior or junior pledge to don DYS FC colours in the country’s third tier competition. Among the footballers are Ibrahim Abu Nawas, Justin Samaan, Hafizan Jahar, Fneckley Baris, Mohd Shahrul Chankui, Mohd Arfiyanshah Abdul Jafar, Mohd Azlan Shah Hassan Nor and Benerlys Raim. Thaufiq joins AirAsia FC

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Former Melaka United defender Thaufiq Abd Haq has signed with AirAsia FC for the FAM League next season. The 28-year-old was given a year contract by the club last month and he is the second Sabahan to join the club following the signing of former Rhinos Didie Arizal in October.

"Yes, I have already signed in December last year. I have been training with the team since November under coach Nizam Jamil and the management offered me a year contract," he said when contacted. He hoped one day he will be able to return and play for Sabah again. "It is sad I wouldn't be able to play for the State next season.

AirAsia had shown a keen interest on me since I was released by Melaka United and as a professional I can't turn down their offer as I need to earn a living. "Anyway, it is another good opportunity for me to learn my trade and hopefully with regular playing time, I could further improve my game and one day may return and play for the Rhinos again."

Rhinos target Karlo

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sime Darby FC striker Karlo Primorac is on the Sabah Rhinos radar. The Croatian former Under-21 player is one of the few names that Sabah Rhinos head coach Vjeran Simunic has in mind as he tries to bolster his attacking front with a clinical goal poacher. “We still need a target man.

We have already identified and negotiated with a few players, and if things go according to plan, they will be here soon,” said Simunic, when met at the team’s training at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex here yesterday. According to Simunic, he is looking for a player like former Perak striker Chad Souza or former Sime Darby FC and PKNS FC centre forward Karlo Primorac.

For the record, Primorac scored 28 goals in his 31 appearances for Sime Darby in 2013. The following year, he donned Selangor PKNS FC colours and managed to score two goals in six appearances. “We need strong players like Chad Souza and Karlo Primorac and we have in mind already who that player is.

Croatian is first foreign signing

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Coach Vjeran Simunic confirmed on Monday that Croatian central defender Igor Cerina is the first foreign signing for Sabah Rhinos in the new season. The 27-year-old who came for trial three weeks ago had just got back from his home town on Sunday after spending the new year with the family.

He last played for S-League outfit Balestier Khalsa FC in the just concluded season and was rated as one of the best defenders in the league and Simunic believed he is the man to mend the leaky Sabah defence. "People may argue that S-League is much inferior to the Super League in Malaysia but we are talking about the Premier League here and with a limited budget and as one of the top defenders in the S-League I think he is good enough for Sabah."

Another import who is likely to get the nod from the coach is Brazilian playmaker Marco Tulio Lopes who arrived with Igor on the same flight from Kuala Lumpur. "At this moment we only signed one with Igor and now comes Marco Tulio. Everything with him is okay because we know who he is and I tested him last year in Perak and he is also very famous in Malaysia for a long time.

KDM, DYS in FAM Cup debut

By FRANCIS XAVIER Francis@newsabahtimes.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: KDM Malaysia FC and DYS FC have been given the nod to feature in the FAM Cup League this upcoming new season. With their entries, Sabah will have two representatives in the competition, which is dubbed as the country’s third division league, after the Super League and the Premier League.

“Both teams have been accepted to compete in the FAM League 2016. With their inclusion, it will give more local players the opportunity to showcase their talent at the national level scene,” said Alijus Hj Sipil yesterday. The Sabah FA Secretary General said they had received a letter from the FA of Malaysia dated December 31, 2015, which confirmed their acceptance into the competition.

Both KDM Malaysia FC and DYS FC have not competed at this level of competition, and will go into the league as the underdogs. “We wish both teams all the best and hope that they can make Sabah proud. “It is also our wish to see them show high sportsmanship and maintain their disciplines at all times in order to maintain the good image of the state,” Alijus added.
