Scott Ollerenshaw tips Darul Takzim to boost stadium attendance

The former Sabah FA forward also believes that Sabah's bid to secure promotion back into the Super League could get a tad too delicate.

By Keeshaanan Sundaresan

Sabah FA legend Scott Ollenrenshaw has tipped Darul Takzim's expensive line-up to attract bigger crowds into the local stadiums and believes that the entrance of quality foreign players like Dani Guiza is fantastic for Malaysian football. Darul Takzim have been dominating headlines in recent months for assembling a majestic squad that includes the likes of Safee Sali, Norshahrul Idlan, Dani Guiza and Simone Del Nero.

The Southern Tigers have looked pretty strong in recent friendly matches, and Scott hopes for them to be a fundamental factor in attracting bigger overall stadium attendance. "It's fantastic for Malaysian football," he said exclusively to Goal.com Malaysia "Hopefully these type of quality players will be able to get the fans back into the stadiums rather than just staying home and watching the English Premier League." Scott was widely known as the 'Ginger Maradona' back during his days with Sabah FA, where he astonishingly scored more than a goal a game for four years.

Malaysian football has been through plenty of ups and downs since then, but Scott believes that there are several fundamental problems that still remain until today. "It's always hard to compare eras. I do think that we have some good quality teams in the Super League now. However there is not enough quality players to sustain so many teams in both the Super League and Premier League.

Daytime kick-off at Likas

http://www.sports247.my

CONTRARY to what was planned earlier, the Sabahawks may have to kick off their Malaysian League campaign under the sun on Jan 7. Likas Stadium – the venue of home matches – is still not bright enough to play matches at night, according to the FA of Malaysia (FAM).

Sabah, who will play in the Premier League this year, will open their campaign against KL Spa Putrajaya FC. Sabah FA secretary Alijus Sipil said the latest report from FAM stated that the stadium lights did not meet the requirements. “It could be some wiring problem because one of the four floodlights was not functional and we were told the bulbs have been replaced.

“We are still hoping the lights can be repaired before the opener or else we just have to play in the afternoon at the same venue,” he said. Alijus also said they could still play at night at the stadium once the lights were repaired after the opening match. The FAM recently revealed that 15 stadiums were too dark for night matches nationwide, including Likas Stadium.

Only four met the mark – Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor, Darul Makmur Stadium (Pahang), Jalan Besar Stadium (Singapore) and State Stadium (Sarawak).

Sabah unfazed by big loss in friendly

http://www.sports247.my
By G. ARAVIND
David McCreery
SABAH were handed a footballing lesson by the Red Giants their friendly at Shah Alam stadium yesterday but the Borneo side’s coach David McCreery feels the results won’t dampen their spirit in a bid to win the Premier League title next season. Sabah were outplayed in almost every department and were handed a morale-sapping 3-0 defeat by the 32-time Malaysia Cup champions.

McCreery said despite the loss, Sabah still had all the ingredients to fight for the Premier League title. “We cannot compare ourselves to Selangor who are of Super League standard. And that doesn’t mean that we can be among the contenders for the Premier League. “Playing against a very experienced side like Selangor needs good preparation and we didn’t have that today.”

McCreery pointed out that one of the reasond behind his team’s lacklustre performance was the journey which his players had to make from Kota Kinabalu. “We only took our flight in the morning and travelled, trained and played a competitive match within a short period – something which is not easy,” he said.

Sabah lose to Selangor in friendly

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah M-League team lost their first friendly match in the Peninsula to Selangor team 0-3 on Wednesday afternoon. The team was two goals down in the first half before they conceded another in the second half. Coach David McCreery when contacted said it was a good experienced for the team in preparation for the new season.

"The players all tried hard and started very well until the penalty that resulted in the first goal." "There was nothing much to expect as it is a relatively new team and we definitely need more matches to work on before the start of the season." He disclosed that 27 players were used during the match in order for him to gauge each individual's ability on the pitch against a very strong team.

He also refused to use tiredness as the excuse as the team was understood to have travelled on an early morning 6am flight to Kuala Lumpur on the same day that may have resulted in most of the players being unable to produce their best. The team's next match is against T-Team today (Thursday) followed by their final match against Police tomorrow (Friday).

Datuk Seri Musa Aman is also the Sabah Football Association (SAFA) president and he told his players to perform well and take it as a responsibilty to their loyal supporters, better known as Sabahawks.

Sabah, who were relegated to the Premier League last season, received this reminder when their new line-up were being introduced on Tuesday. Musa told Bernama that he was unhappy with their performance in the Super League last season, but highly believes that they will do well this time.

"There is no excuse for any player to sell the game or commit any wrongdoing that could jeopardise the team's chances of winning" he added.

Be committed, disciplined: CM

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Honesty and sincerity by the players is one of the keys for Sabah to succeed in the forthcoming M-League, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman. The Chief Minister who is also the President of the Sabah Football Association said this at the official signing ceremony of the M-League players and the introduction of all the players as well as those in the FAM Cup and President Cup teams at a leading hotel here on Tuesday.

"As I mentioned before, not just in government and organisation but in sports as well, the most important factor to success is honesty and sincerity." "The players must be clean and play with full commitment and be disciplined and I don't want to hear any negative comments on the player such as late night outs, selling matches or other stunts.

"There is no excuse for any of the players who try to be funny and breach their conduct as it is important to protect the reputation of the State while playing for the team." He urged the players to be serious in their training sessions under David McCreery to produce a winning team. 'With his vast experience as a player and a coach I hope the players will pay full attention during the training sessions and absorb as much knowledge from him."

Likas Stadium Sabahawks home den

New Sabah Times
ALL ENDS WELL … from left, Alijus, Grace One Sdn Bhd’s representative Chan Chuan Sian, Osman, Musa, Lawrence and Yusof during the function yesterday.
KOTA KINABALU: Alijus Hj Sipil sees Kedah, Johor, Sarawak and KL Sime Darby as their main rivals in the Premier League challenge 2013. While not wanting to underestimate the rest, the Sabahawks newly appointed interim team manager, said the four will be among the teams to watch when the new season kicks off on January 7, 2013. Alijus, who is also the Sabah FA Secretary General, said this when met at the Meet-the-Player session, at a leading hotel yesterday.

Besides the four teams and Sabah, the rest of the 12-team Premier League 2013 are KL SPA Putra Jaya, NS Betaria FC, UiTM FC, Kuala Lumpur, KL Pos Malaysia FC, Police and Perlis. Sabahawks will kick off their challenge by taking on FAM Cup 2012 champions KL SPA Putrajaya FC at home (Jan 7). In a related development, Alijus said that they have named Likas Stadium as their home den.

He said that despite the Stadium facing a minor facelift, they are convinced it will be ready in time for the opening home game. “We have spoken to the management of the stadium, and we have been assured it will be ready to host our first home match,” said Alijus. According to him, besides the Likas Stadium, they have also named Tawau Mini Stadium as their second option.

He then revealed that the only question mark now is whether Sabah will play their home matches at night or in the evening. “If we meet the FA of Malaysia’s requirements, which stated that the brightness of all of the floodlights at the stadium must be 1000 lux at the minimum, then we will be playing our matches at night, otherwise we will have to play in the evening,” said Alijus, adding that the inspection will be held tonight (last night).

Bring back glory days!

New Sabah Times
SABAH’S COLOURS … representative from Grace One Sdn Bhd, Chan Chuan Sian (2nd left), hands over the State jersey to Musa (3rd right).
KOTA KINABALU: The newly revamped State squad has been given a tall order to bring back glory days to Sabah football. Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman insists as long as the players give all they have and are serious in their bid to win, it is not impossible for the current side to do well and make Sabah proud in the national football scene.

He also stressed it is important that everyone, especially the players, stay united and work together towards achieving their common goals. The Sabah FA Supremo also wants greater professionalism from all parties involved to ensure Sabah realises its quest for an immediate return to the Super League 2014. Speaking at the Meet-the-Player session held at a leading hotel here yesterday, Musa admitted that he was disappointed with the past performance of the team.

“We are not happy with the team’s performance before this … it did not perform very well. And we took a drastic step to revamp the squad by dropping almost 60 per cent of the players to try and return Sabah to the Super League (in 2014),” he said, while wanting to see greater commitment and dedication from the team including players, coaches and management alike.

Sabah players told to safeguard their dignity and revive

The Malay Mail / Bernama

THE Sabah football players must protect their dignity as state players in the coming Premier League season, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman today. Musa, who is also Sabah Football Association (SAFA) president, said the team, affectionately known as Sabahawks by their supporters, had a duty to their supporters and were required to put up a good performance.

"There is no excuse for any player to sell the game or commit any wrongdoing that could jeopardise the team's chances of winning. "I have to be honest that I was not happy with our performance in the Super League (last season). But I am confident you will do well this time," he told the players after being introduced to the new Sabah line-up here today.

Sabah was relegated to the Premier League after finishing among the bottom teams in Super League standings last year. Earlier, Deputy SAFA president Datuk Lawrence Gimbang hoped the state team would go all out to revive Sabah's glory days in football. "There is no substitute to victory. You need to be dedicated and committed to ensure your team win," he said.

Cebagoo FC will be competitive: President

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Cebagoo FC who are making their debut in the forthcoming FAM League will give their full commitment. Club President Mohd Joh Wid said this as he revealed the full name list of the team including team officials and players on Monday. "We believe in the team as the officials are chosen based on their experience in the development of the sport from the grassroots level.

The players too have gone through the same process such as those carried out by Sabah Football Association to reach the competitive level," he said. He hoped the team's entry will open the door and give opportunities for new players from the State to have a chance to play a part in the League in the future. He called on the footballing fans in the State to give their full support for the three Sabah teams competing next season.

He also said the club would like to express their gratitude to Datuk Seri Musa Aman, Sabah Chief Minister and President of Sbaha FA for endorsing and supporting their participation in this league. The full name list of Cebagoo FC for the FAM 2013 are:

Three-match tune-up for Sabahawks

New Sabah Times

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabahawks will be on a four-day friendly tour to the Klang Valley as part of their pre-season preparations later this month. Team manager Alijus Hj Sipil said yesterday that they are scheduled to play three matches, including two against Super League outfits Selangor and T-Team while the third match is against Police.

After abandoning their plan to go to Brunei, Alijus said the trip will be a good opportunity for the team to get the much-needed competitive match temperament. “This will also be an opportunity for our head coach (David McCreery) to have a good look at his players. It will also be a good venue for him to gauge the team’s weaknesses and strengths,” said Alijus, who is also the FA secretary general.

“We are trying to get more competitive matches for the team, but for now, this is what we got for them,” he said. Alijus said that the team will leave for the tour on December 26 (morning) and will take on Selangor in their first match later in the evening at the Shah Alam Stadium. Then, they face off with T-Team, who are under the watchful eyes of former Sabah head coach Peter James Butler, at the Linatex field in Gombak the following day before taking on fellow Premier League outfit Police at the Pulapol field in Kuala Lumpur on December 28, before returning home the next day.

Cebagoo FC ready for debut

New Sabah Times
GEARED UP … the Cebagoo FC FAM Cup squad for the 2013 challenge.
KOTA KINABALU: Cebagoo FC has pledged to give it a ‘good fight’ when they make their debut in the FAM Cup competition next year. The Sepanggar-based club side will be Sabah’s sole representative in the competition, which is dubbed as the Third Division League after the Super League and the Premier League.

“We will be competing with strong determination and desire to do well for the State,” said club President Mohd Joh Wid yesterday. “We believe in the ability of our team as well as our officers who were chosen based on their experience in the development of the game in Sabah, right from the grassroots level.

“Similarly, to the players also, who have been through the process of natural development in competitive football in the State,” Joh added. On behalf of the club, Joh also expressed his sincere thanks to the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, who is also the Sabah FA President, for his blessings and support.

Former Sabah hitman Ollerenshaw makes top ten list

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Scott Ollerenshaw said he was extremely humbled and honoured to be named by a Malaysian online news portal recently as one of the top ten superstar signings that had made an impact on the scene since the game turned professional over the years. The 45-year-old former Australian international first came to Sabah in 1994 and it was towards the end of the signing deadline when Kelly Tham spotted and recruited him.

He made an immediate impact upon his arrival at the local scene, forging a telepathic partnership with Matlan Marjan and the two terrorised opposing defenders with their goal prowess. Scott also boasted a record average of more than one goal a game for four straight seasons while playing for Sabah.

He netted an astonishing 180 goals from 110 matches that saw him winning the Golden Boot twice before his retirement at 31 due to a serious hip injury. He is married to ex-national karate exponent Michelle Koh and runs his own sports tourism business in Kota Kinabalu which specialises in organising junior and adult football as well as lawn bowl tours of Sabah and regularly appears on Astro's FourFourTwo as a football pundit. Another Sabah foreign import, the late David Rocastle also made the list.

FA appoints Alijus as Sabahawks team manager

New Sabah Times

KOTA KINABALU: Alijus Haji Sipil has been named as the new team manager for the Sabahawks. However, the New Sabah Times Sports reliably learnt that his appointment is only temporary. It is believed that the FA is still looking for a more suitable name in leading the team for the new season.

Well, the FA secretary general may be seen as the right man and has all the credentials and qualities to guide the new-look State side. However, it is believed that time may be his main obstacle in guiding the team. Alijus, who was the team manager of the State side that won the Sukma gold medal in Pahang not too long ago, is one of the directors at the City Hall and may not have enough time to be with the team, especially when they are playing away matches.

Being the secretary general of the association is already taking its toll on him, and adding the burden of being the manager (of the team) it could be a little too much for him to take. But having said that if the FA could not find their man, then Alijus will still be the best choice to hold the post at least for the rest of the 2013 season.

Razali Zinin is Cebagoo FC head coach

Daily Express
Kota Kinabalu: Cebagoo FC received a boost when former international Razali Zinin joined them as the head coach for their campaign in the FAM Cup competition this coming season. The Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry officer when contacted said he was first approached by the Sepanggar based outfit's advisor Datuk Mohd Hasnol Ayub on the possibility in guiding the club before he met up with president Joh Wid and subsequently took up the offer.

"It is a huge task for me and I am ready to take up the challenge. Football is always in my blood and the return to the sport as coach is another ladder up for me and I am willing to give and share all my knowledge and experience with the players." He said he also shared the club's vision that is to mould the team into a force to be reckoned with in the national football arena.

Razali who was the State team captain and a national team regular before he retired in the 1994-95 season started out as a striker when he made his debut in 1979 before he was turned into an attacking midfielder. He had trained under coach Stanley Chew, German Ger Schmidt, James Wong, Azah Ezrein, Englishmen Frank Upton and Roy Lorenson throughout his footballing career.

Sabah to open campaign at home

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah M-League team will open their campaign in the 2013 Premier League season against KL SPA Putrajaya FC at home on Jan 7. The venue is yet to be confirmed as the Likas Stadium is still under renovation even though it is believed that work will be finished by the end of the month.

However, the match against newcomers KL SPA may work well with the team as they need to get a good start with a relatively new set of players in the new season. According to Sabah's new signing Khairul Izwan Khalid who last played for T-Team, KL SPA consist of mostly junior players with only two seniors in the team.

He said he was asked to attend trial with the team earlier before he received an offer from Sabah after winning over the management here during a trial. Sabah's next match is a much tougher tie on Jan 11 against Sime Darby FC who had knocked them out in the first round of the FA Cup match last season.

Sabahawks kick off League campaign against Putrajaya FC

New Sabah Times

KOTA KINABALU: Sabahawks will kick off their 2013 campaign against Premier League new-boys KL SPA Putrajaya FC on January 7 in a home tie. The look-easy opener will be followed by five matches in a busy January for the Sabahawks. They would take on Sime Darby FC in their first away tie on January 11, followed by a home game against NS Betaria FC (January 14), away to UiTM FC (January 18) before taking on Kedah in what is likely to be their biggest home tie on January 21.

After the five league matches, Sabahawks will switch their focus to the FA Cup when they would begin their challenge by taking on Super League outfit Felda United FC on January 25. The return leg tie has been set for February 26. After the FA Cup clash, the League is scheduled to take a 20-day break before Sabahawks resume their challenge by playing away to Kuala Lumpur on February 15.

Three days later they are home to KL Pos Malaysia before travelling to Johor on February 22. There will be three games in March for the Sabahawks. They take on Police on March 1 at home before playing away to Sarawak on March 8. After the Borneo Derby clash, the League is taking another break (21 days) before Sabahawks resume their challenge by playing away to Perlis on March 29, which will be the conclusion of the first round.

President Cup squad begins training

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: The 2013 State President Cup squad started their first day of training at the Likas Sports Complex on Tuesday. Only 24 players turned up for the session, which was conducted by Justin Ganai and assisted by Burhan Ajui. A few other players from outstation are yet to report for duty.

Also present were four players led by last year's skipper Didie Arizal Ibrahim, Dendy Lowa, Zulmanshah Aling and Endre S Tipay, who are also training with the senior team under David McCreery at the moment. The players were given a running session in the morning at the jogging track before the ball training session in the evening at 'B' field. Justin spent almost an hour fine-tuning the players' technique on the ball and reminded them the importance of mastering the basic skills in a real match situation before they were given another hour match play session.

Meanwhile, the team next season will be managed again by Datuk Juil Nuatim who had led the team twice to the quarterfinal stages in the past two seasons. With an average age of only 19, the team did extremely well last season with their top place finish in the Group A preliminary round and they also achieved that by staying unbeaten at home and suffered only a single defeat in an away game.

Stop overlooking local coaches!

New Sabah Times

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA has been urged to give coaches from outside the State Capital due consideration when naming their man for the State junior squads. A senior coach Faizal Yee yesterday claimed that all this while coaches from outside the State Capital have been overlooked by the State governing body when naming their choice.

While not wanting to criticise the FA, the Lahad Datu-based Yee opined that coaches from throughout the State should be given an equal chance as long as they have the qualification to manage the State squads. He pointed out that if we are to look at the coaches (with the State teams), most of them come from around the City while those from outstation have been overlooked.

“It has been like that for many years, and we (outstation coaches) feel neglected. I don’t know about the others but this is my view … I’m sure there are other coaches from other districts who feel the same way,” said Yee. He said that they felt very demoralised for not being considered by the FA.

FA Cup 1st Round: Sabah vs Felda 25th Jan

By ESPNSTAR.com staff

The Red Warriors have been given a bye in the first round due to their status as defending champions, and will meet the winner of the clash between LIONSXII and PKNS FC. Although a meeting between Kelantan and the Singaporean outfit would arguably be one of the ties of the second round, LIONSXII coach V. Sundramoorthy insists his side cannot get too far ahead of themselves.

"It's a tough draw," he said. "We will play the champions [Kelantan] if we get through, provided we can beat PKNS, who are a strong side. "It is definitely better to play stronger teams first but for now, we need to get past PKNS for a start." Plenty of eyes will also be turned to the meeting between Selangor and ATM, which will represent a clash between one of the traditional powerhouses in Malaysian football and the country's rising force.

The Red Giants finished third in the Super League last season and reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup, while the Armed Forces sealed promotion to the top flight by winning the Premier League. ATM coach B. Sathianathan, who also guided them to the final of the Malaysia Cup, where they fell to Kelantan, admitted his side had been handed a tough draw.

Johnny very excited with his new role

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: Newly appointed Sabah M-league assistant coach Johnny Dominicus is very excited with his new role. The DBKK staff said he accepted the task with open arms after being endorsed by the Sabah Football Association recently to assist David McCreery in the 2013 season.

The former President Cup coach who guided the state team to a historic win in the Pahang Sukma games together with Matasan Ahmad told Express Sports that he was very grateful for the chance given to him by the committee and vowed to give his best in his role and at the same time learning the trade from David.

"It is a step up for me and it is also a golden opportunity for me to learn from one of the best. I would not miss a thing in the world to accept the role, as the experience will definitely broaden my knowledge as a coach in future. I must thank the committee for having the trust in me." Johnny who was once the understudy to previous Sabah head coach Gary Philip revealed that David was always willing to listen to grouses from the players.

New Sabah Times

KOTA KINABALU: Koh Traore from Mali is set to become Sabah’s second foreign signing for the new season. Earlier on, the Sabah FA had settled for Welsh defender Rhys David Weston as their first catch, and tying up the 6-foot tall Traore would see the Sabah FA complete its puzzle in forming a side that will be featuring in the Premier League challenge 2013.

In revealing their latest catch via SMS yesterday, the FA Secretary General Alijus Hj Sipil also finally named the eight local imports, whom they will be counting on to guide the State side to make a quick return to top-flight action – the Super League. Traore, who plied his trade in the Algerian League prior to his arrival here, is only a medical report away from becoming a Sabahawk.

His agent, identified only as Nick, on the nationality of his player said: “He was born in Burkina Faso, but has a Mali passport.” “We have not signed yet, as we are still awaiting the medical report first, only then we will sign,” he added. As for the eight local imports, former national custodian Mohd Syamsuri Md Mustafa is the notable one among the lot.

A new venue could solve training woes

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah M-League team are urged to consider the Sabah Foundation football field as their pre-season training ground. Innoprise Capital Sdn Bhd manager Abas Ali made the call on Monday in view of the predicament faced by the team over their training venue. Coach David McCreery was in dilemma as the team were unable to use their usual training ground at Likas Stadium because of the renovation currently underway in preparation for the 2013 Sabah Games.

And the team were forced to use the Intan Campus field since the start of their pre-season training which was situated more than 10km away in Tuaran. They were also unable to utilise the University Sabah Malaysia (UMS) field resulting in the Sabah Football Association committee led by Vice President I Datuk Osman Jamal making a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Harun Abdullah on Monday regarding the matter.

Abas said it was rather sad to see the team having to endure such a predicament with the season set to start soon. "The Sabah football squad are the pride of our State and we will definitely give priority to them if they are interested to train here."

Maxsius not playing for Sabah

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: FAM had recruited Maxsius Musa for the Harimau Muda B 2013 squad and he will not be playing for the state President Cup squad next season as early reported. The youngster is now with his new team for training cum competition stint in Turkey under new coach Razip Ismail.

His name was among the list of players that has been released on Thursday that were supposed to feature in the state President Cup campaign next season.  The Keningau lad who played as an attacking midfielder for the state in the Sukma winning squad was one of the six players from the state to have caught the attention of the selection committee in the national wide search here more than two months ago.

However, he was the only one called up for a final trial in October conducted by then head coach Ismail Ibrahim who had since joined Johor FA. Maxsius first burst into the scene in the President Cup early last season with his darting runs and powerful shots. Earlier in the campaign, he was one of the leading scorers for the team but a hamstring injury midway through the campaign derailed his progress.

Players resume pre-season training

Daily Express

Kota Kinabalu: The State M-League pre-season training session is slowly taking shape with all but three local imports from the peninsula showing up for the sessions so far. Two strikers, one midfielder, one goalkeeper and one defender who are all believed to have signed-up appeared at the Intan campus training ground on Thursday.

Another centre half was also at the scene and judging by his performance and the reaction of the coaches, he may be given a chance to wear Sabah colours next season. The three players who are yet to show up are believed to be the first choice goalkeeper, a striker from T-Team and another central defender. After a long spell of rain, the training session on Thursday was a welcome relief for David McCreery as the sky opened up and the players were given a thorough workout by the coach.

Malian import striker Koh Traore again was the focal point and he certainly did not disappoint with his intelligent runs and powerful shots. During the two-hour sessions, he displayed his heading ability and the quality of his finishing despite his lack of fitness having only arrived 48 hours earlier.
