FA Cup 1st Round: Sabah vs Felda 25th Jan

By ESPNSTAR.com staff

The Red Warriors have been given a bye in the first round due to their status as defending champions, and will meet the winner of the clash between LIONSXII and PKNS FC. Although a meeting between Kelantan and the Singaporean outfit would arguably be one of the ties of the second round, LIONSXII coach V. Sundramoorthy insists his side cannot get too far ahead of themselves.

"It's a tough draw," he said. "We will play the champions [Kelantan] if we get through, provided we can beat PKNS, who are a strong side. "It is definitely better to play stronger teams first but for now, we need to get past PKNS for a start." Plenty of eyes will also be turned to the meeting between Selangor and ATM, which will represent a clash between one of the traditional powerhouses in Malaysian football and the country's rising force.

The Red Giants finished third in the Super League last season and reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup, while the Armed Forces sealed promotion to the top flight by winning the Premier League. ATM coach B. Sathianathan, who also guided them to the final of the Malaysia Cup, where they fell to Kelantan, admitted his side had been handed a tough draw.

"In such competitions, luck plays an important part," he said. "It's a tough draw for us and should we go through, we will have to play away from home again. "The objective [for ATM] is to do well in the league as ATM are in the Super League for the first time in its history. "Personally, I hope to finish in the top three in the league and do well in one of the two cup competitions.

Elsewhere, ambitious Super League outfit Darul Takzim will take on Perak, while 2012 semi-finalists Terengganu and Kedah take on SPA FC and NS Betaria respectively. Last year's runners-up Sime Darby, who were also handed a first-round bye, will get their campaign started with a game against the winner of the clash between T-Team and Perlis.

Cambodia's Preach Khan Reach, the only invited side in the competition, open against PBAPP FC.
