Kota Kinabalu: The Group A match between Luton and Slimm River will kick off the Sabah Unity Football League Tournament 2016 at the Penampang Stadium today (Saturday) at 3.30pm.
34 teams in eight groups will be taking part in the competition sanctioned by Sabah Football Association (Safa) Penampang and jointly organised by Fairplay Sports Management and Penampang Sport Complex.
There are eight seeded teams in this year's competition. Luton is seeded in Group A with Slimm River, Ole FC and Komplex FC; NABT in Group B with DYS KK, Darau FC and Kolopis United; Telaga in Group C with Kesso Kepayan, SESB and Scoregasms FT; Likas United in Group D with Battalion 16, The Blues and Kerabat FC; ST Labuan in Group E with, Mamai FC, Akuma FT and Penampang Selection; Likas United 2 in Group F with KDM FC Labuan, DYS Lahad Datu and Kiulu;
Smart in Group G with Adisson FT, MKT FT, R.U.F.T Riders F and LS Oldboys; and Penjara in Group H with Mix Team, Bomba, Pemuda Kota Belud and Asiau team.
A FA Cup competition will also be held featuring the teams finishing top in each group.
Total prizes worth more than RM30,000 plus trophies, medals and football attires await the winners with the League Champions set to take home RM7,000, and runners-up will get RM4,000 while the semifinalists will take a consolation prize of RM1,500 each.
The FA Cup Champions will win RM2,000 plus trophy and the runners-up will take a cash prize of RM1,000.
Apart from that every participating teams will also be given one set of Carino brand jersey.
Safa Penampang President Livita Koisun will officiate the opening ceremony. Organising chairman Edward Jomiji urged all football fans to come and give moral support to the tournament and he also expressed his gratitude to sponsors Ararat Sports and Souvenirs as well as United Venturise Sdn Bhd.
