PETALING JAYA: Sabah’s Rozaimi Abdul Rahman needed only one training session to impress Selangor coach Irfan Bakti.
Irfan said yesterday that the on-loan striker did enough to ensure his place in Selangor’s starting line-up for the Malaysia Cup.
Chasing a record 33rd Malaysia Cup title, the Red Giants open their Group D campaign against Sarawak at the State Stadium in Kuching tonight.
The others in the group are T-Team and former kingpins Pahang.
Selangor snapped up the 19-year-old Buntong-lad after Sabah failed to qualify for the Malaysia Cup.
The striker has been in fine form, scoring 10 goals for Malaysia in the AFC Under-22 qualifiers in Yangoon in June and leading Sabah to their first Sukma football title in Kuantan in July.
“You can see the qualities he has from just one training session. His movement is good and he has got real presence,” said Irfan, who is confident of a good start in the Malaysia Cup.
However, Selangor will be without three key players for their opening clash.
Midfielder K. Gurusamy is nursing a knee injury while skipper Mohd Amri Yahya and defender Bunyamin Omar are suspended.
