PETALING JAYA: Sabah striker Rozaimi Abdul Rahman will be on loan to Selangor for the Malaysia Cup competition.
FA of Selangor (FAS) secretary Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said they have secured the services of the striker following his strong showing in the AFC Under-22 qualifiers in Yangon recently.
Rozaimi scored 10 goals, including two hat-tricks in the tournament, but Malaysia failed to progress to the Finals, which will be held next year.
“We want to strengthen the team and Rozaimi is available because Sabah have not qualified for the Malaysia Cup,” said Hamidin.
FAS are hard-pressed to pacify their dwindling fans after finishing empty-handed last season.
Selangor, who have a rich football tradition, are gunning for a record 33rd Malaysia Cup title.
Coach Irfan Bakti has a huge task on his hands to end Selangor’s six-year Malaysia Cup drought.
To make matters worse, he will be without his main playmaker K. Gurusamy, who will undergo knee surgery soon.
It is a big blow to the Red Giants and Malaysia. Gurusamy was a key member of the national team which won the Suzuki Cup Asean Football Federation (AFF) in 2010.
Irfan will be banking on Safiq Rahim, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal, Azidan Saruddin and K. Soley to produce the spark in the engine room while the forward line will be led by Mohd Amri Yahyah, R. Surendren and Croation Bosko Balaban.
Selangor desperately need the trophy to placate their fans.
