GOAL-SCORER … Md Rozaimi Abd Rahman (red) rounds the keeper before slotting into an empty net for Sabah’s equaliser after just six minutes of play. |
What is left for them now is a mathematical chance to avoid the drop, and this is only if they can win both their remaining matches – against Selangor away and home to Negeri Sembilan, which is very unlikely, not with the kind of performance they showed last night. Although it was quite a convincing first half for the host, but after the break, they seemed to be running out of steam, as the visiting Terengganu were pretty much in command of the game.
Terengganu stunned the homesters with a fourth-minute opener. It started from a corner where Azizon Kadir failed to make a clean catch. Flanker Joseph Kalang Tie was alert enough to blast home from close range. But it took Sabah two minutes to find the equaliser through Md Rozaimi Abd Rahman, who rounded the Terengganu keeper Md Sharbinee Allawee Ramli after being put through by Brendan Gan.
At the half-hour mark, Sabah could have found the much needed lead when Rozaimi centred for Brendan, unfortunately his attempt hit the goalpost before it went out of play. Mohd Ashari Samsudin restored Terengganu’s lead with a header from an ensuing corner.
When the second half resumed, Sabah brought in rusty Razlan Oto for Brendan Gan, and it proved to be a bad gamble as it was Terengganu, who had the better possession. Late on, Razlan, who had just recovered from a broken leg, was replaced by Mohd Safuan Ibrahim. And it was game over for Sabah when Md Reithuddin flicked the ball into an own net. The failed mission saw Sabah still rooting second from bottom in the standings. They take on Selangor away on Tuesday.
