KOTA KINABALU: Sabahawks Juniors are determined to do ‘one step better’ when they take on Melaka in a President’s Cup tie at the Hang Tuah Stadium in Melaka today.
In their first meeting against the historical state side in the season opener last January, the tie ended in a one-all draw. And this time, Burhan Ajui said they are going for the three points.
The Sabahawks Juniors assistant coach said there is no more room for any slip-ups.
“We must try the best to turn things around. We had a modest start to our second round campaign by nicking a draw against Pahang at home on Monday, and I hope we improve on the outing against Melaka tomorrow (today).
“We know they are a decent side, but if we play to our best, and do it as a team, our chances of winning our first match in the second round are bright,” said Burhan, a former state defender.
Burhan, who will be taking charge of the team in the absence of head coach Justin Ganai, who did not make the trip due to some unforeseen circumstances, added: “I just hope the players will continue to fight and keep trying.”
“At the moment, things are not so rosy in our campaign. As you can see, we are currently 11th in the standings (18 teams). We are three rungs below the quarter-finals qualification spot.
“But in terms of points, we are not too far away from the team that occupy eighth spot, which is Penang. We are only separated by two points, but then again, if we don’t do our job well, we will be drifting further. So this makes our tie against Melaka a crucial one,” said Burhan, or fondly known as Bob among friends.
On his plan, Burhan said he will carry out what Justin has planned for the team.
“We will do what he (Justin) wants the team to do, including the first team,” said Burhan.
He also revealed that midfielder Sabri Sahar was part of the travelling squad after missing their tie against Pahang due to high fever.
“He (Sabri) is part of the team, and will make it straight into the first team. However, Didie (Arizal Ibrahim) is not going. He is likely to play a role with the senior side this Friday.
“We are also without two defenders – Rawilson (Batiul) and Shazree (Ruhif Ismail) due to suspension, and in view of that, we are going to make a minor shake-up at the backline,” he said.
Burhan said the rest of the first-team players against Pahang are likely to be retained.
