New Sabah Times

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA confirmed yesterday that the Sabah Super League side will take on the national team in a friendly match at the Likas Stadium on February 24.

Its secretary general, Alijus Sipil said the match that is scheduled for kick-off at 8.15pm will give local football fans a rare chance to watch their team live in action.

Interestingly, Sabah’s Shahrudin Yakup has been included in the national side, which is under the watchful eyes of Datuk K. Rajagobal.

“The scheduling of this match gives a great privilege to us at the Sabah FA and we would like to invite all football fans in the state to come out and support their team.
“This is a rare opportunity for them to get a closer look at some of the national players in action.
“We hope they will turn up in numbers to fill the stands and enjoy the match together,” said Alijus in a short messages services (SMS) yesterday.

He said tickets for the match will go on sale on February 23 as per Super League ticket prices.
“Those who wish to book their tickets early can do so with the Sabah FA or through the Sabahawks Fan Club.
“Ticket prices are maintained as per Super League rates, which isRM20 for grandstand and RM10 for open terrace seats.

Meanwhile, Sabah team manager, Hj Shahriman Abdullah also welcomed the match, adding that this would benefit the development of football in the State.
He added that it would also provide a good testing ground for the state team.

“It is a rare opportunity for teams to go head to head with the national squad. The chance to face them is considered a privilege, not only for us, but for all football fans in Sabah.
“We will do our best to give Rajagobal’s squad the challenge they expect … it would be great if we can play in front of a full capacity crowd.

The Justin Ganai-coached squad are still finding their feet in the Super League after merely managing to stay clear off the bottom of the 14-team standings with only two wins from eight matches.

They defeated Sarawak (2-1) and Kuala Lumpur (2-0) at home, but lost away to KL Felda United FC (0-2) and home to Singapore LionsXII FC (0-1), while their other encounters ended in draws (0-0 away to T-Team, 2-2 away to Selangor PKNS FC, 0-0 home to Kelantan and 2-2 away to Kedah).
