Brendan Gan, after playing in Sabah for one season, will now don the colours of the Rockdale City Suns in the New South Wales Premier League
Former Sabah player, Brendan Gan, after one season in the Malaysian Super League (MSL), has signed for New South Wales Premier League (NSWPL) side Rockdale City Suns.
The 24-year-old made his impact for Sydney FC back in 2008 but was soon sidelined by the Sky Blues even after winning Football NSWPL player of the year.
In November 2011, Gan made the jump to Sabah where he made 12 appearances and scored two goals in the MSL.
He was with the SabaHawks with fellow countryman, Michael Baird, who also signed a one-year contract with the Malaysian club.
During his stint at Sabah, Gan put up in Kota Kinabalu and was part of a struggling team.
He told the Leader: "My move was based on trying to get some game time and experience at a high level."
Despite the poor results, "it was a great experience," Gan added.
Unbeknownst to most MSL fans, Gan is part Malaysian as his father was born there.
The young lad was, in fact, eligible to play for the Malayan Tigers but turned down the offer because he didn't want to forfeit his Australian passport.
"I didn't know much of the language, the standard of football is different, and they rely on the passing game," Gan said.
He is hoping that his time with the Suns will lead to some interest from A-League clubs.
The Rockdale City Suns will start the new NSWPL campaign and host Blacktown City on March 17.
