Penjara FC shackle KDM Labuan for Sabah Open League crown

By FRANCIS XAVIER

KOTA KINABALU: Penjara FC emerged as the champion of the Sabah Football Open League 2018. They clinched the title after edging KDM Labuan FC 1-0 in extra time at the Penampang Stadium yesterday. It was former state striker Jufrey Omopor that turned hero for his Penjara FC side by netting the winner in the 108th minute of extra time of the final clash.

In fact, the final match was held on Saturday, but it was put off to yesterday (morning) after match official called off the tie late in the second half of the extra time due to the unplayable condition as it was getting dark. Then the score was 0-0. The two sides played the remaining minutes of the tie yesterday where Jufrey struck the winner.

The feat saw them pocket RM15, 000 prize money plus trophy and medals while KDM FC Labuan settled for RM8000, also plus trophy and medals. DBKK FT were given a walk over 3-0 victory to eventually finish third and bagged RM5000 following Quilmes FC’s withdrawal. For the record, a total of 33 teams took part in the league that kicked off in July. It was jointly organised by Marven Sports, Andrew Lian Awa and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
